While industry representatives looked on in interest, government officials spent the past two weeks in Geneva discussing options for amending the Montreal Protocol at the November Copenhagen meeting. It was a "divergent meeting" says Du Pont Fluorochemicals environmental manager Tony Vogelsberg, "any idea that anyone had was put on the table."
The United Nations Environment Programme required governments to announce their proposals for chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) phaseouts at least six months before the November meeting. The options are expected to be narrowed down at another Geneva meeting scheduled for July.
The meeting held no surprises, observers say. …
