Fed: Older Australians taking up training in growing numbers

Older Australians are taking up training and learning in ever increasing numbers, debunking
the old adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

A report by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research has found older people
are adapting to the changes in society and the workplace by taking up training opportunities.

Report editor ANDREW SMITH says not only do older people retain the ability to learn
and adapt to change, but they consider carefully how best to meet their own learning needs.

Population studies show that by 2020, there will be more workers aged over 45 than
under 25, and by 2051, the median age of Australians will be 45-years-old.

The report says as people live longer and healthier lives, an increasing number of
older people are prolonging their working lives well past the conventional retirement
age.

Mr SMITH says it's therefore crucial to reorient the Australian training system towards
reskilling of older, adult workers.

Education Minister DAVID KEMP says the training environment is changing to ensure Australian
workers gain the right skills, regardless of their age.
